Boring for New Wrist Pins
Saturday, December 10, 2011 by JNWhen we got the locomotive, the rods were removed and the wrist pins on the drivers coated with a layer of grease. Over the years the grease deteriorated and the pins rusted enough that re-turning them was warranted. This would also mean that new bronze bearings for the rods would need to be purchased. Since steel is cheaper than bronze, we decided to replace the steel pins instead. When we measured the bores after their removal, we found them to be significantly tapered and it was decided to re-bore them straight. This allowed us to "re-quarter" them as well.
A.F. Dick Manufacturing of Knappa has a boring mill and rotary table of capable size to perform the task and over the last week while the machine was waiting for an upcoming job, we were able to "sneak" our project in.
Art Dick donated the use of the company facilities and his employee, Brett Woodard, donated his time after hours and on the weekend to operate the precision boring mill.
Now that all these bores are true, in the near future, we'll be machining the new wrist pins so they can be pressed in. This is the last hurdle to getting #21's wheels under her for the first time since 1972. Many thanks to Art Dick and Brett Woodard for making this happen.
