Smokebox braces repaired

Wednesday, December 19, 2018 by mc

When SMV 21 was taken apart in California prior to it being trucked to Washington several key parts were cut with a torch as there was not enough time for proper disassembly. These parts have to be repaired if possible, or new parts fabricated. Two of these parts are the firebox braces - the angled supports at the front end of the boiler. To repair these braces by welding, the ends must first be beveled so they can be welded all the way through. The ends were marked and the ends ground to the proper angle. (see next photos)
