Adjusting the wheel spacingWednesday, August 19, 2020 by MCWe have spent the past couple of weeks adjusting the wheel spacing to exactly 56 inches center to center on each pair of drive wheels. This involves accurately measuring the existing center to center distance then loosening the wedge behind the drive box, dropping the binder and fitting the correct shim between the shoe and the frame, in front of the drive box to correct the distance. This process must be repeated over and over as all 3 pair of drivers on both sides must be the same, and the same distance from the cylinders on each side. In order to accurately measure to the center of each axle, John devised cone shaped plugs with a center spindle that we glued into the center of each wheel. This gives us an accurate center so that we could measure the center to center distance within 1/64th of an inch. More Photo NEWS |
